Recent Reading
I read a number of books each year. Below are some of the books I’m reading or have recently read about Christian life and spirituality (I read other topics as well).
The Ecstasy of Loving God – A good book on loving God and drawing close to Him, and how that can lead to supernatural and sometimes unexplainable experiences. A good foundation is given from both scripture and church history. If you have religious attitudes about prayer and worship, this book will challenge them!
Normal Christianity – If Jesus is Normal, What is the Church? – This book is about the difference between “average Christianity” (what the typical Christian does and how they compare themselves with each other) and what Jesus’ ministry did and expected (“normal Christianity”). Strongly recommended!
A Practical Guide to Evangelism Supernaturally – I took a course in evangelism that Chris was lead instructor for. This book covers much of the material in that class, and talks as much about our attitudes and motives as it does the message and method.
Fall to Grace: A Revolution of God, Self & Society – Jay Bakker (Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker’s son) talks about grace, from Paul’s letters to the Romans and Galatians, combined with reflections on his life.
Culture of Honor: Sustaining a Supernatural Environment – Danny Silk of Bethel Church, Redding, CA. This book explains the “culture” that Bethel Church has developed, where people are treated honorably, whether they’re believers or not, whether they’ve succeeded or failed. It addresses the development of church leadership at Bethel and getting rid of a poverty mindset as well.
